Citation Chatter

by: Glenda

I would like to meet the person who decided that scholarly papers needed to have a specific format. It may have sounded like a good idea at the time but it is driving me crazy; especially when I am nearing the submission deadline. I would like to “cite” a thing or two to them but it probably wouldn’t be very “scholarly”.

Okay, some of the frustration is my own fault for not adhering to the schedule but life gets in the way. I am always searching for things which make the process easier. The citation software is a great timesaver for me. It helps me keep the structure correct and that is a “good start”.

Now if I could find something that could convert my thoughts to match the topics required for the paper, I would be a happy soul.

Anybody have any “tips” for working with citations?

Hi Glenda i agree with the agrivation of the citations and the APA formatting. Life happens and it makes it difficult with preparing the papers we need to have for our classes. I do however use this and maybe it will help you also its a step by step tutorial that you can pause and play as you type your paper. Its in the library under the APA citation center go to Example Sources and click on How To Format Your Paper In APA Style Using Microsoft Word 2007. I pray this helps you and anyone else that needs help i use it evrytime i type up a paper.

I totally agree that it is frustrating, I mean it is so much trouble ot go through this whole rigamarole (hope i spelled it right) just to say what you mean. I say they should do away with APA style, because in the real world i never use it and i am sure 96% of the population dont either. so i totally understand and I hope you can just push through as i am.

Nothing has proven to be more frustrating that the dreaded "APA" format. It isn't so much that the format is hard, it is that different instructors have their own "twist" or "flavor" of what they understand of it What I mean is just when you think that you have it down pat, the term is over and the next instructor is telling you that they took off points because...something or the other does not quite follow the "APA" format. The prior instructor said something else was wrong and the problem became a burned image on your brain, then here comes another blow. It got so bad that I begin to use the manual and write down the page number, paragraph, and sentence where I found my information.
I understand the premise of APA format, but is it really necessary? The worse part of it all is finding a resource that backs up your "opinion." The magic word here is "opinion" so why do I need to find someone else that may or may not agree with my thoughts. I don't think that anything is going to change it no matter how many complaints we make. Like all things, it is just another of the many rules to follow and guides to pattern after. Just remember to write down the page, paragraph, and sentence where you find the information so that when they take off points, you will have a leg to stand on when you bring it to their attention.

I so agree w/ you, however it is a great source of self-discipline to follow the guidelines. Anyway, if you go to www.thewritedirection.net/drpaper, you can get the software then all you'll have to worry about are your thoughts and how to word them! Hope that helps!
