You can do it—returning to school

One thing that students returning to school after a long break or later in life seem to have in common is a lack of self-confidence. What I realized early in my teaching career is that these students often don’t give themselves enough credit for what they are accomplishing.

First, if you are thinking, “I’m too old for this,” or “I’ve been out of school too long,” then think again. Start out with a positive mindset. I’ve been teaching for 15 years, and I’ve seen many people in your shoes be successful. Focus on the excitement of the new challenge rather than anticipating negative happenings.

Second, set manageable goals for the day, the week and the term. You might already be balancing work and family. Adding school to the mix gives you one more thing to manage, and you end up feeling overwhelmed at first. However, with some time management skills, you can find enough hours in the day. Once you start to see that you can meet your goals, it will build your self-confidence.

Next, reward yourself for meeting those goals and when you do well on an assignment. This can be something as small as understanding what you had to read for class or something as big as an A on a graded assignment.

Finally, be proud of yourself and what you are doing. It’s important you remember what an achievement it is to decide to go to college—no matter what time in life. Give yourself some credit for this job well done!
