Women in Business: Mentoring Skill Unleashed!

In my previous post, I discussed the topic of mentoring students or new employees entering the workforce. I began to think about the ways in which I use mentoring today.

To get you up to speed if you missed my last blog post, my coworker Tony acted as an instrumental mentor in the beginning of my career. Now ten years later, I decided to give back by becoming a mentor within the same company where I made my start. I didn’t realize how much information and advice new staff needed, until I took time to listen.

Recently, an employee made a comment about a project assignment. She wanted feedback about processing a specific client request. From our discussion, I sensed she had other questions and needed guidance. In this moment, a light bulb went off! I needed to put myself out there, just as my mentor had so many years before. It was my turn! But, how could I as a new mentor, offer assistance without making her feel uncomfortable? She did not want any of her frustrations communicated to lead management. I confirmed her questions would be held in confidence and that she could feel free to ask questions at any time. I let her know I was happy to help and appreciated her hard work and effort.

By leaving the door open, I became a mentor. The employee opened up more and told me she felt so much better and could finally relax in her new role within the company. All she needed was a mentor, and the only thing I had to do as a mentor was become available by volunteering my time and assistance. There is no need to push assistance, in my opinion. A colleague will notify you if the door is open. So, in short, learn from my experience in becoming an active mentor. It’s simple, just be there. Reach out and you can make a difference!
