The Pros of Joining a Student Club

As many students already know, joining an academic club provides many benefits. As the faculty moderator of the Workplace Learning Training and Development Club (WLTDC) at American InterContinental University Online, I watch as students develop a new skill set through club events and monthly meetings. So first, let’s discuss club events. Like most clubs, WLTDC holds monthly events to bring members together and present on topics of interest to the club. Additionally, speakers are invited to make presentations regarding a specific industry in which he/she is employed or their area of expertise. This presents a valuable opportunity for students to network with industry professionals. Students are also able to link unit concepts from their course of study with current market trends and see real world examples of how their knowledge will benefit them in the workplace.

Like monthly events, monthly meetings offer time for management as well as members, to discuss important ways to further develop the club. Events and meetings are optional, unless elected as club president or vice president. Leadership positions are responsible for leading events and meetings, hence attendance is required. One of the best parts of being involved in a club is the ability to develop strong friendships, while learning to be a leader and better rounded for the job search ahead, following graduation. Finally, it never hurts to record club membership on one’s resume!
