The Myth of the Super-Mom

Let’s face it: If you’re a mom with a job, you’re busy. Media has led us to believe it’s possible to juggle all of life’s obligations while looking like a supermodel. While I have yet to meet a woman who would describe herself as a Super-Mom, the myth persists.
I am a mother of four, and the founder of a private school where I teach and do administrative work. In 2006, I began working on a Masters in Education from AIU, so I have juggled being a student as well. That alone makes me look like a Super-Mom! I rarely feel like one, though, and I battle self-doubts every time my five-year-old looks at me longingly and asks, “Are you doing homework AGAIN?”
I have learned to celebrate little victories in life, using them as reminders of just how super I really am. For example, I feel super when:
- Everyone in the house has clean underwear.
- I feed my family something I don’t regret for dinner.
- I’m spending uninterrupted time with my children doing something that we all enjoy.
- I’m spending 10 minutes alone with my husband.
- I’ve finished a paper or project for work or school. Plenty of people sit in solitary offices or apartments getting things done; I do it with a toddler interrupting me every 10 minutes!
- I’m doing something for myself - taking a bath, taking a walk, going to the gym. It doesn’t matter what, just that I’m doing it!
There are so many other simple, daily ways in which we all express our Super-Mom abilities. The reality, though, is this: There is no “perfect mom” out there, just great moms doing their best every day. So celebrate those little victories, and remember to enjoy your life and your Super-ness!
