The Land of Want To & Have To
Posted: Jan 18th, 2011
Do you work at a nine to five job and often find yourself looking forward to clocking out just so you can work or volunteer somewhere else? Is there something that you truly enjoy doing but you’re unpaid or underpaid? Are you an entrepreneur at heart who stays up until mid-night working on your business plan? Well, if you have found yourself in this kind of situation, you are officially in between the land of “Have To” and the land of “Want To.
The land of “Have To” is simply defined as the position that you hold at your current company and provides your main or only source of income. In this land, you work hard at your job with regular hours following the same routine. This position pays for housing so you and your family have a place to lay your heads at night. It pays for food so you won’t go through the day hungry. It also pays for your clothes so you will be presentable at work or elsewhere. And lastly, it pays for gas to get to where you really desire to be…the land of “Want To.”
In the land of “Want To,” you thoroughly enjoy logging in your hours as part-time, greeting the others that work or volunteer there, doing whatever it is that you love to do. You may also be the one who is working to launch your first entrepreneurial venture as a business owner. Regardless of the position or the dream that you are fervently working on, your “Want To” position often turns your eight hour shifts into 12-16 hour stretches. Why? Because you enjoy it, you’re good at it and you wouldn’t mind doing this for most of your life.
With that being said, continue working toward your “Want To,” and know that your hard work will not be in vain! Although the hours are long and some parts of your life may seem to be suffering because you’re sacrificing play dates for the kids or you’re the last one to see the latest box-office hit, know that anything worth having is worth working for!
As I come to a close, I hope that some of you have found this to be the beginning of happily managing both the land of “Have To” and “Want to.” For all the others, I hope that you have found the ability to continue working passionately towards your ultimate goal of job satisfaction. Continue working on those business plans and donating your time until your “want to” becomes your “have to”!
