Questions to Ask Yourself Before Pursuing an Online Education
Posted: Jul 31st, 2009
With today’s busy lifestyles, taking an online class is an attractive option. However, carefully consider your situation before you sign up. First, you should have a computer and Internet access in your home. If you do not, you will have a harder time getting your work completed and turned in on time. Next, you need to be comfortable using a computer and programs such as Microsoft Word and email. After all, if you are not comfortable with the computer and software or surfing the Internet, not only will you have to learn the material for the class, but you will also have to learn how to use the computer. That’s more stress than you need.
If you have a computer and are comfortable using it, then take a look at your self-discipline and time management skills. Online classes have deadlines just like lecture classes. If you aren’t going to class two or three days a week, will you still devote the time you would have spend in the classroom to your studies? Also, keep in mind that for every hour spent in any class, you should spend at least an hour out of class studying. Will you make the time to do your work?
Now that you’ve assessed your self-discipline and time management skills, you’re ready to consider signing up for an online class. I recommend that your first online class be in a subject with which you are somewhat familiar or comfortable if possible. This will lessen your anxiety and boost your confidence.
After starting the class, carefully read the syllabus and go through all the materials posted for you. Print out the course schedule and assignments and write those on a calendar—make a schedule and stick to it. Good luck!
