OK, I’m not Supermom… So Who Am I?

I pondered this question after my last post. If Supermom is a myth, then with whom can I identify myself? I’m not Mrs. Cleaver, spending my days cleaning and cooking; nor am I Sarah Palin, giving birth and returning to my high-profile job the next day. Are there actually role models out there for me?

I went in search of three every day women who inspire me the most. The first person I thought of is my friend Kelli. She is a phenomenal SAHM, intimately involved with her three children. Sometimes, when my toddler is keeping me up at night, I remember reading an email from her describing months of getting no more than 45 minutes of sleep at a time due to her youngest son’s illness, and I know that I can handle a restless night. Kelli is devoted to her family in a way that constantly reminds me of the joy it is to be in service of my own husband and children.

My dear friend Nancy is a role model for me as a business woman – she manages a dozen or so employees and hundreds of volunteers. She does so with grace, dignity, and femininity that is often lost in the male-driven work place. While she no longer deals with the pressures of coming home to hungry children, or teething toddlers, she does know how to put being a mother first when it matters, being at the births of all of her grand-babies and being there when her grown children need her most.

I spent hours racking my brain for someone I know who balances the kind of life I do - young children, a career, a husband, a social life, and so on. The funny thing is, I couldn't think of anyone. I am sure there are plenty of women out there who would make great role models in this category; it's just that I don't know any of them! That was when I made a big decision: I will be my own role model! Not the average, every day me, but the big picture me in my finest moments.

Hence role model number three: Jen. Jen is a mother of four young boys. She works 20-30 hours a week at a private school that she and her husband started five years ago and works with several humanitarian projects, involving her children whenever possible. In addition, she works with her husband to manage business projects, the family finances, and their home. Oh, and did I mention that she juggled all of that while getting an online Master's degree in education?

Of course, I know myself well enough to know all of my faults, and to experience every moment of my bad days. If I look at that snapshot, however, I am impressed and awed at my own ability to live one incredible life. Now here's my question for you - who are your role models, and who are YOU that is a role model for others? I had fun answering that one for myself, hopefully you will too.
