While women enjoy roles and goals in life, moving forward professionally can be a source of immense personal and financial satisfaction. Dressing appropriately and authoritatively can help you create a confident image of competence and dynamism. These types of office-worthy looks are easy to create when shopping in your own closet if you keep a few simple guidelines in mind.

Mix-and-match classic work separates in unexpected colors to keep your look approachable, yet assured. If the basic design of clothing is classic and understated, you can put together rich and warm colors for lots of versatile options. Blue and brown look great together for professional ensembles, as do green and cream, lime green and navy, and yellow with raspberry. Switching up tanks, sweaters and jackets in complimentary hues is a great way to maximize individual pieces while maintaining an office-friendly wardrobe.

Break up suits and twinsets for an easy range of modifiable professional silhouettes. Wear a suit jacket with a silky tank and trouser jeans for a casual Friday, or remix any solid color twinset with a brightly colored patterned skirt for a splash of eye-catching color. By switching up jackets, tanks, sweaters and bottoms, any five or six basic pieces can be freshened up for a successful day at the office. Don’t be afraid to experiment!

Accessories can instantly change the tone of classic suits and casual ensembles. Silk scarves, antique brooches and trendy shoes are inexpensive yet high-style elements of a polished, professional wardrobe. These types of pieces add depth and personality to basic pieces with effortless ease. Snap up neckerchiefs anywhere from little vintage shops to mass market retailers, look for pins at local art fair and keep an eye on edgy, yet comfortable footwear retailers such as Nine West or Steve Madden for great sales on shoes that work with all sorts of pants and skirts. Ballet flats, pointy-toe kitten heels and leather ankle boots are always good choices for women or work – and work it!
