As we move into 2010, it’s time to set this year’s resolutions and goals. Why not make it your career? Are you happy with your current company, but feel you deserve an opportunity for more challenges? If so, now is the time to let your manager know you are interested in taking on new responsibilities. Here are some helpful tips for getting recognized by your manager and coworkers.

  • Make your resolution and goals known. First, make a list of your accomplishments as well as your career goals and interests. This will help you to have clear objectives and points when speaking with your manager.
  • Have an open line of communication with your manager. Set -up a time with your manager to discuss your career goals. Let him or her know you are looking to advance within the company. Sharing your ideas will ensure that you are on the same page and give your manager a better sense of your career aspirations. By telling your manager what interests you, they may be able to suggest some extra projects for you, which can boost your resume.
  • Participate and initiate. It’s important to make yourself an asset to the company. Show them how you make an impact on the organization by joining extra committees the company offers.
  • Get to know your company. The more people who know you and your performance, the better chance you have at obtaining the position you want. When joining extra projects, get to know everyone by name and let them know what you can contribute to the team.

Remember that communicating your goals is an important part of finding a new position within your current company. Don’t sit back and hope that one day you’ll get recognized, make it part of your resolution to take the next step in your career.
