Attending school online is quickly becoming a popular alternative for busy women who want to get ahead in their education or career. Although it provides the convenience of attending class in the comfort of your own home, it lacks the social aspect that can be so important during education. Here are a few ways to bring back the social dynamic to the online classroom.
- Find students who live in your area
With millions of online students located across the U.S., chances are some of your classmates could also be a neighbor or live just a few towns away. As you begin your online classes, ask other students where they are located. If you find students who live near you, invite them to join you for a study session at the local coffee shop. - Set-up Web chats outside of class time
Webcams are a useful and inexpensive tool to use when chatting with classmates. Set up time with classmates outside of class to review the material and get to know each other. Being able to put a face with a name will help bring your online community closer and make it more personal. - Join groups and clubs
Many online universities offer clubs and groups that bring together students of similar interests. Review what you university offers and get involved! - Arrange volunteering events
Participating in volunteer activities can bring people together, even if they are scattered around the country. Suggest a volunteer activity that each classmate can replicate in their town and set-up a time to share your experiences. - Connect through social media sites
Social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter and blogs provide a friendly space online to interact with classmates outside of the classroom. “Friend” or “follow” your classmates and strike up a conversation.
Remember, even if you aren’t seeing your classmates in person, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t find some great friends while getting your degree.

I love the online experience. I work full-time, am a full-time mom, have to run a house full-time...wow, there wasn't any time left for me to commute back and forth to a traditional classroom. That's what I love about online classes. They fit around your busy schedule, and doesn't take away time from your family. You can also make new friends who share the same interests and struggles as you do. It's also a great place to make contacts who can help you along the way in the future after you graduate. You have to be organized with your time, but the payoffs are well worth it!
