Age-Proofing Your Search:  Tips for Older Job Seekers

Although age discrimination is illegal, many older job seekers feel it still exists. Age can often play a factor in a person’s ability to find employment. But how do “older” job seekers increase their opportunities and decrease their chances of age discrimination?

Age-proof your resume: Limit outdated work experience by eliminating anything 10 years or older. Include current professional and technical experience by citing the latest technology and skills you have gained through your academic program(s), volunteer work and/or recent employment. Do not include high school dates and only include recent degree program(s). Lastly, be prepared to email your resume to employers. Try emailing a copy to yourself first, to ensure the formatting does not get lost.

Addressing the issue in your cover letter: Always cater cover letters to the specific position. Carefully review the job description and include the skills and/or qualifications it requires of potential candidates within the letter. Stay away from listing any years worth of experience you have, especially if it’s in the double digits. Specify how you have related knowledge that a younger candidate may not have.

The key is getting the interview. Hopefully at that point, the employer will see the true benefits of a seasoned candidate including a commitment to the field, a great track record and experience.
