Do you ever feel like the world should be different? Have you ever dreamed that there was more support for busy students like yourself who have to juggle other responsibilities like work and family? Speak up about your concerns. You can make a difference!
Speak up about your concerns. You may not believe it, but your elected officials are listening, and they want to hear your voice! Here are a few steps you can take to start making changes in our society:
- Learn about the issues — Find out more about what matters to students and to working women. Sign up for Women Employed’s monthly e-newsletter, WE-Zine, to learn about these issues. Read books like Nickel and Dimed. Pay attention to the news – there is a lot of action in Washington DC and in your state on policies that affect working women and students.
- Find out who your state and federal legislators are — To do that, visit Congress.org and type your zip code into the ‘Get Involved’ box.
- Join Women Employed’s Action Network — so you can stay informed about issues you care about and what Congress is doing about them.
- Write your legislators and tell them what you think — Women Employed’s Action Network will make it easy for you by sending you alerts on issues we think you might care about, which include template emails for your legislators. All you have to do is put in your contact information and click send!
- Better yet – call your legislators — Your Senators and Representatives love to hear from voters, and you’d be surprised how happy they will be to listen to your concerns.
- Use Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter to get the word out — Post about the issues you care about, and get your friends and networks involved, too!
- Vote — Support political candidates who make women’s and students’ issues a priority.
- Write a letter to the editor — Write to your local newspaper about the issues that matter to you. Here are some tips on how to do it!
- Look for other ways you can make your voice heard — Join campus groups that work on the issues you care about. Attend rallies in support of those issues, if you can. Visit your elected officials in person in their offices. They would love to see you and hear what you think!
When you speak out, you can make a difference. You can make this a better world!
