Seeking a Mentor
Mar 2nd, 2009
It is certainly true that in today’s society it is almost mandatory that you have a good mentor to assist in navigating your career goals, as well as your personal development. Mentors can provide guidance in your professional choices, your outside activities and also provide encouragement on how to deal with office politics, etc. Mentors can help find those new opportunities that you may have otherwise missed.
Therefore, personally I feel that everyone should have a mentor, especially at various stages of their career, it is almost essential for your success.
The key to obtaining a mentor is do an outstanding job so that you can easily become noticed. Keep in mind that mentors will chose you, although in some cases you may have to let the supporter know you would like him or her to serve as your mentor and be able to justify why. After all, know that the person’s reputation is on the line. One of the important aspects of mentoring is understanding that there is a relationship. A relationship where there is trust and integrity on both parts. Can you imagine trusting someone with your future, your finances and other important factors of your life, without knowing or trusting that individual?
Remember that you can have more than one mentor who may serve as a specific role model or counselor. Your mentor may be a college professor, a teacher, friend, a relative, coach, neighbor, community leader, member of your church, co-worker or any individual who is part of your everyday life. Remember that mentors are dependable and also encouraging.
