Growing up, Melinda Janeiro had a concrete plan for her life. As an accomplished member of the JROTC, she planned to continue her military training and enroll at a military college after finishing high school. However, like so many other women, life circumstances changed her plans. She had her first child during her senior year and as a result, she put her college plans on hold in order to provide for her family.
Out in the workforce, Melinda continued to strive for success and prove herself as a valuable employee. One of her first jobs was in a factory that produced swim diapers for babies. Within three months of starting Melinda was promoted, and this trend has continued throughout her career.
Now a mother of three and an account manager at a food product company, she decided it was time to enroll in college.
“For 12 years, I wanted more for my children, my family and myself,” said Melinda. “I wanted to feel as if I had accomplished something, and I could contribute something back to society.”
Being a busy mother and a full-time employee, Melinda turned to her family for support as she added another responsibility to her plate.
“I told my kids why I was going back to school and what was going to be expected of them,” said Melinda. “They needed to complete their chores and give me time to complete my work. It had to be a family effort with everyone helping in order to make it a reality"
Melinda recently completed her associate’s degree and is continuing her education to earn a bachelor’s degree in marketing. One day, she hopes to be a marketing director and based on her determination, it looks like she will reach her goal.
