For most women, the decision to go back to school is often not an easy one. With the challenges of working or motherhood (or both), taking on an education can be daunting. At the same time, it can be an extremely rewarding and beneficial experience.

But how do you decide when you’re ready to embark on this new adventure? Take a look at our four most important things to address before going back to school.

  1. Research, research and more research – It’s a bit ironic, but you really need to do your homework, before you do your homework. What educational institution is the best fit for you? Are you looking to pursue an online education? How much will this cost? How will you obtain financial aid and scholarships? When will you find the time to go to school and do the required work? Answer all the questions and address all the concerns before you commit.
  2. Have a clear goal and vision for your education – Know where you want your next step to be. Have a firm understanding of what degree you want to earn and why. Where does your interest lie? What are the job outcomes? Set your goals (and know that further education will help you reach them) so you have a clear vision when you begin your program. This will not only help you pick your educational institution, it will help you stay on track throughout your journey.
  3. Garner the support of your family and friends – When taking on the challenge of additional education, it’s essential to have a support group. Having your husband, kids, other family and friends on your side throughout the process will help make the transition into education a smooth one. Communicate with them about your class schedule, both from a day-to-day perspective, but long-term as well. Share your goals for study time and work together to balance school and life.
  4. Become financially aware – Take a look at your financial well-being currently and map out the changes that may occur while in school and after earning a degree. Are you and your family ready to take on the financial responsibility associated with further education? Discuss your options, look into financial aid and scholarships and forecast your financial future. Don’t just focus on the cost of education, but also look at the future once you’ve received your degree.
